Santa Hat Free Crochet Pattern

The idea for this pattern started out with my little one needing a santa hat for preschool. Instead of finding the shop-bought one I have stashed away somewhere I had this great idea to make one!

Somehow I managed to conceive this idea and finish the whole thing in just one day. Guess I’m getting better at designing? Normally it takes me a month or more!

For this hat, I wanted to try out working in the third loop of half double crochet stitches to create a ribbed look. I’ve seen a lot of patterns using this technique lately and was keen to try it out.

I’ve made triangle hats before so I had a rough idea of how to achieve the shape I wanted. I decided to work in a continuous spiral so I didn’t have to deal with joining rounds.

When my triangle got to the size I needed, I fastened off. Not having made a hat with this stitch before I turned it inside out to take a look. I really loved the texture it created and almost wanted to make that the outside. But I chose to stick to the plan and left the ribbing on the outside.

I crocheted the white brim onto the edge using the same method I’d used in my recent Alien Rainbow Beanie and Perky Cat Hat designs.

Then it was time for the pom pom. In the past I’ve made pom poms by wrapping yarn and cutting it. This time I decided to experiment.

Making use of the loops left by the rib stitches, I crocheted into them to make a base then worked some ruffles to form a cute little pom pom.

I think it turned out great! I love the fluffy ruffles!

Because the pom pom was crocheted straight on there, I was able to complete the entire hat without pulling out my yarn needle! – I just used my hook to weave the ends.

The only challenge remaining is to get my boy to stay still long enough to snap a good photo!

  1. Thank you for the FREE Santa hat pattern.. I am on a set disability check and am in wheelchair . I need something to keep me occupied. I have made special baby blankets for grandkids and great grandkids and needed something different to make. So thank you again I am gonna try this hat pattern.

  2. That is so cute!! It would be neat to use Bernat pipsqueak yarn for the white part because it is such a fluffy and fuzzy yarn 🙂

  3. Hi Kat! Your hat pattern is great and simple to use. Thank-you for sharing.

I now have a super Santa hat made for next year. However, the tassel has me stumped. Have tried several times to recreate your work through the directions and nope … can’t seem to understand how it’s done. Any hope of a utube or even a few pictures on the progression??

    1. Hi Diane. Thanks for your comment. Yes, some photos would be a good idea – I’ll add it to my to-do list 🙂

Maybe this will help for now though: The pom pom is built onto the red stitches at the tip of the hat – the Vs of the hdcs. Work the first lot of scs into one side of the Vs then come back working into the other side of the Vs. The second row is worked into the Vs of the scs – work into one side of the Vs then turn and work into the remaining side of the Vs.

  4. Thanks for clarifying for me. And I know what you mean about a to-do list!!! I think, with those extra directions, I’ve finally done it. Mind you, I think I’ve gerry-rigged it a bit, but in the end, once fluffed, it turned out perfect, so my thanks to you again. Very, very pleased with your pattern and my efforts! Cheers, Diane

  5. Thanks so much for the pattern it’s so cute n I love that I can make them for all three members of the family so they really can say they were Santa’s helpers

  6. I am a visual learner as in graph crochet, for me to comprehend is a little over whelming however the pattern is awesome.
