Cupcake Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

These simple cupcakes can be made in any size. The hat is worked in a spiral from the top down with the brim being added at the end. When you’ve finished your cupcake you can leave it plain or decorate it how ever you like. Sew some beads on for sprinkles, add a cherry on top or a motif like a heart or a butterfly.

You are welcome to sell the items you make with this pattern, but please give me, Krazy Kabbage, a mention in your sales listing and provide a link to my website www.krazykabbage.com.

I used Red Heart Super Saver (medium weight; 100% acrylic) in Minty, Orchid or Petal Pink with Buff for the brim.

You will need crochet hook sizes I/9 – 5.50mm and H/8 – 5.00mm

If you use a different yarn – Use the hook size recommended on your yarn for the top part of the hat. Go down a hook size for the brim.

This pattern uses US terminology.

Stitches and Techniques Used: Magic ring, half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st).

Size chart

The main photo shows 3 hats: Pink is 0-3 months size with 5 increase rounds and 4 rounds for length (see second chart). Purple is 6-12 months with 6 increase rounds and 5 rounds for length. The green hat is the next size up.

Follow the pattern to create the crown circle. Measure across the center of your circle to check you are making the size of hat you want.

How many rounds do you have? Find that number in the first column of the second chart and use the numbers in that row to complete the pattern. If your brim is too wide you can use the X Y Z values of the row above.

Size Diameter of Crown

0-3 months 4.25 5.5
6-12 months 5 6.25

10 9 12 10 11

Top of hat

Follow the pattern below to make the crown circle for the hat. Stop increasing when the circle diameter measures the correct size (see chart). Then skip to the ‘Length’ instruction.

Use I/9 hook and pastel color yarn.

Start with a Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: 8 hdc in ring. Do not join rounds (hat is worked in a spiral).

From this point forward, work all stitches into the 3rd loop to create spiral rib.

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each of next 8. (16)

Rnd 3: [hdc in next, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4: [hdc in each of next 2, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (32 hdc)

Rnd 5: [hdc in each of next 3, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (40 hdc)

Rnd 6: [hdc in each of next 4, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (48 hdc)

Rnd 7: [hdc in each of next 5, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (56 hdc)

Rnd 8: [hdc in each of next 6, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (64 hdc)

Rnd 9: [hdc in each of next 7, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (72 hdc)

Rnd 10: [hdc in each of next 8, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (80 hdc)

Length: hdc in each around. Repeat according to second chart.

Sc in next, sl st in next and fasten off.

Brim

Use H/8 hook and brown yarn.

Replace X, Y and Z with the numbers shown in the second chart.

Sl st to join in 3rd loop of a hdc along edge of hat. Chain X. Sc in 2nd ch from hk and each of next Y stitches.

*Working into the 3rd loop on the body of the hat, sl st in each of next 2 and turn. Skip sl sts. Working in the back loops only, sc in each of next X stitches. Ch 1 and turn. Continuing to work in the back loops only, skip first stitch, sc in each of next Z stitches. Repeat from * around hat.

When brim is complete, turn hat inside out and slip stitch through both thicknesses to close gap.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. I love trying new crochet patterns and right now I’m really into beanies. I knew immediately that this was a cupcake hat and I think little girls will live it.

  2. Quick question. I just got to the brim of the hat. And I’m a little confused now. If I chain 8 (x) and then sc in the 2nd from the hook and the next 6 (y). I feel like I only have 7 stitches to head back, yet the pattern tells me to do 8. What am I missing? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Jessica. You need to work the last stitch into the chain at the end. It is a little tricky if you haven’t done it before but it gives a much neater edge. Hope this helps. Kat.

  3. I have a question. I am so confused with this band at the bottom…..I keep doing it as I think it says, but then I look and it’s going crooked…. I have made a lot of hats, so this isn’t my first one. But i am having a horrible time with that band.
Do you have a video on making the band?

        1. Hi Tia.

This pattern hasn’t been tested with DK but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I included a size chart so any yarn could be used.

Start making the top of the hat and keep increasing (see rounds 1-10) until the diameter measures 6.5 inches. Then use the second chart to make the side of the hat.

Don’t fasten off just yet. Start making the brim – only a little bit – like 4-6 rows. Then measure your hat. Lay it flat and measure from the top down to the edge of the brim – it needs to be 8 inches for the size you want – if it’s not then you can add/undo some rounds from the length and/or adjust the brim width.

          Hope this helps 🙂

  4. Hi! These hats are so cute! I made a few for preemies to donate to the hospital my daughter was at when she was born. They came out great! I even used your brim technique for other hat styles as well.

  5. When doing the length (size 0-3), how should we doing one one hdc in each? Do we continue in the third loop? Do we continue to work in the spiral?

  6. I am confused with the X,Y,Z part of the pattern. I don’t understand which number I am supposed to use? Please help me! Thank you!
    Laura
