How to Crochet the Fast-forward Chevron Purse

This week I decided to make myself a new purse. I’m quite picky when it comes to bags so designing and making my own allowed me to customize it just the way I wanted.

I had something fun yet practical in mind. It needed enough room inside for my things without being enormous. I wanted a long strap since I prefer cross-body bags that are easy to carry and keep my hands free.

The texture I chose built on my COLOR SPLASH SUN HAT design, but this time, instead of slanted stripes I made a single bold chevron line pointing all the way around the bag.

I also decided to include two colors to make it really stand out.

I really enjoyed designing it and love the end result!

Like the sun hat, this bag uses Lily Sugar n Cream 100% cotton yarn from my local Michaels Craft Store. There are also a number of substitutes available, including Peaches and Cream (sold at Walmart) or Hobby Lobby’s I love this cotton.

For my bag I picked out a nice dark grey color and chose a vibrant rainbow color to contrast. I really love how these colors work together to give the appearance of a storm cloud with a rainbow breaking through.

I decided to line my bag with some pockets inside and a zipper closure.

    1. I am doing it in a 100% polyester yarn right now and it’s working fine. Acrylic will work also. Both will be a bit stretchier than cotton though.

  1. I don’t understand the steps between the base and panel….. do I drop the base and start the panel with a different color? How does it connect…….. so confused

  2. Fell in love with this on Facebook! Cannot wait to try it–couple of quick projects first, then I will dive in!
Thank you for sharing this pattern!

  3. Would have loved to make this bag. But sadly i am not good with english recepies. Would have loved it in Danish. Beautiful through.

    1. There should be a translator somewhere on your website. Give it a go and see maybe you can make it after all. Luck to you.

  4. Currently working this pattern. I am using Hushabye Cotton/Acrylic yarn from Hobby Lobby and Sugar and Cream….love it!! Question: Do i just run the non working yarn up the side? Will the side be hidden?

    1. Hi Angela, glad you are enjoying the pattern! Sounds like you are talking about the chevrons – don’t cut the yarn, just drop and pick up as you go. When you do the top part of the bag it will be hidden. Hope this helps. Kat.

  5. Finished the bag but how do I keep it from stretching??? I’m using red heart super saver yarn instead of the cotton.

    1. Acrylic yarn stretches more than cotton. Lining it should help. You could also add fabric backing to the strap.

      1. I used Red Super Saver also. To stabilize the handles, I did a twisted single crochet (or you could use the crab stitch) around both sides of the handles and bag. My handles were curling in on one side and out on the other; it looked goofy. Acrylic is not as stable as cotton.
Also, I think I will add the lining–went through too much effort making it and want it to last awhile.
I’m planning to make it again with cotton.

  6. Hi, Kat 👋
This is really beautiful and I love your color combos. Thanks for the pattern. This is very top on my to do list 😁 Pinning also 😎

  7. Help! For some reason this section does not make sense to me:
“For last chevron stop at the end of row 1. Slip stitch last row and starting chain together along inside to close side of bag. Fasten off.”
The repeat of rows 2 and 3 was not a problem, but I just don’t get the above quoted part. Please help!

    1. Hi Rebecca. When you have worked the panel all the way around the bag and are on the last chevron, stop at the end of row 1 (should be top of bag/opposite end to base), you should have changed color to grey (or your main color), chain 1 and turn, then you join the starting chain of the panel with the last row together with slip stitches – this creates a seam inside the bag to form the body of the bag – see 2nd construction photo near the top of this page. Does this help?

  8. I think it helps. when you explained it was on the inside of the bag, I think that’s where I was confused. I will try this and let you know if I need more details.
Thanks so much for the awesome pattern! I enjoyed it up until I got stuck.
    Thanks again!
    Rebecca

  9. Somehow what you said triggered clarity for me and I completed the bag last night!
Thanks again for the pattern and for your more detailed help!!

    1. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to make a video of this. If you’d like to try following the written pattern you should find it’s really detailed, reads the same way a video would (use the ‘stitches and terms used’ section if you aren’t familiar with the abbreviations. If you get stuck you can send me a message via the contact form, or comment here, and I’ll try to help.

  10. Hi there seems to be a piece missing in the pattern otherwise I’m not reading it right.

When doing the panel, the pattern does correspond with the picture. There seems to be a piece missing on the pattern as to how to crochet the centre front panel under the main panel.

    1. The bag is made in 3 parts – first the base, then the panel which is the striped chevrons worked onto the base – like adding a brim to a top down beanie, then the top section is worked onto the top edge of the panel. If you are still stuck feel free to email me with more detail on which row you’re at and/or a photo of what you’ve done so far. Email is kat @ krazykabbage . com

  11. Thank you, Kat! You helped me figure out where I was going wrong. I read the entire pattern before starting and noted the “SK 2” throughout the pattern. I was skipping two chains in the foundation row instead of a SK 1. Everything came up right in the end though. I just chained 37 and did the SK 2 that was stuck in my head. I am now crocheting the base of my THIRD bag. I’ve already finished 2 full purses since posting. LOL. I really appreciate your pattern a lot. The purses it makes are just gorgeous and give crafters like me an endless list of possibilities! There will be some ladies I know that will be sporting some beautiful hand bags this Christmas morning! Thank you. 😀

  12. Hi, thank you for posting this pattern! I had just finished making a feather storm tote bag.
Would you please tell me the math for making the bag bigger? I’m making this with a smaller yarn. I need to know the multiples. Also to know how long the starting chain for the bag bottom to end up with the number of stitches I will need. Thank you very much.

    1. The total stitches on the last round of the base needs to be a multiple of 4. So you could keep the starting chain the same then add extra rounds adding 2, 4 or 6 etc to keep the multiple of 4. If you wanted to make the base longer then add a multiple of 2 to the starting chain, adding an extra 2 stitches on each side of the base.
To make the panel section taller, add a multiple of 2 to that starting chain then add 1 stitch to the top part of the chevron and 1 to the bottom for each 2 you add to the start chain.
Hope this helps and I’d love to see how it turns out so please share photos and tag me 🙂

  13. Thank you for this lovely pattern. I appreciate the well written instructions. I am nearly finished with my first purse in acrylic yarn. My chevrons (mostly) are not laying flat. Do you block your purses?

  14. Hello! I decided to start this bad for a friend because it’s absolutely gorgeous. However, I’m running into an issue with the chevrons and in particular it’s the part where you make 2 sc in the the last stitch at the top of the chevron. Like another commenter it seems like there’s not enough chains for there to be a last stitch past the 36th stitch. Am I putting 2 stitches in the 36th? Very confused about this and I tried to look at the image and noticed I was messing it up and had to undo all of the panel. Please help.

  15. Hi, I love this purse and would like to give it a try. I prefer chain or leather straps , however, is there a way to do this but use a chain strap?

  16. This purse is so adorable, I absolutely love the felted version in the picture. Gotta make this one soon.

  17. I’m just starting and already having a problem. On row 1 if I do 24 sc on the other side of the foundation chain I still have 2 chains left before the sl st. Do I skip the two chains and sl st into the first sc? What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks

  18. I just saw your post on Pinterest, i’m ooohing & awwing the purse in the pic of all the purses, its the one on the far right, 2nd one down, it looks like a dark denim base, & those other colors are beautiful, but for the life of me I can’t find any (cotton) yarns that look like the variegated colors, can you please tell me what yarns (names of the colors) that are in it? Thank you so much

  19. I’m a couple years late starting this… but somehow I dropped a ln entire row at the base…. now I’m at the top I’ve paused (testing on acrylic first)

4 Seasons Spotsaver 10ply 100% Acrylic in Silver
Portacraft 8ply 100% Acrylic Stripes in Parrot.

By dropping a row I miss out on 2 colour Chevrons so I’m starting again using
4 Seasons Marvel 12ply 100% Acrylic and the Portacraft Stripes Parrot.

I’m using a 4.5mm hook because it’s acrylic – and I love the colours versus the plain… I’m in love with this pattern… and as long as I count 18 (sk2) 18 it works up beautifully.

I’m not much of a sewer but hoping a smaller hook will help with stretch… and then I’ll source the colours in cotton.

Thanks everyone for your comments. . I’m only 7 months into my journey and love how basic stitches in the right order creates beauty.

    Keep hookin’
