I needed to make a pom pom to use as a tail for the Easter Bunny poncho/sweater/outfit I’m making for a friend.
I wanted to make a big fluffy tail but a regular pom pom would be too heavy and also difficult to sew on.
I decided that a flat-backed pom pom would work best for this.
I crocheted a chain loop pom pom onto the Santa Hat I designed a few months ago so I built on that idea and came up with this.
My pom pom starts out with a circle of half double crochet stitches worked into the third loop of the previous round to create a base for the pom pom. Then, single crochet stitches and chain loops are worked into the remaining two loops of the stitches to create this fluffy ruffled bunny tail.
I’m still working on this Easter Bunny outfit but here is a photo of me testing out the pom pom – I love how big and fluffy it is!
The pom pom can be made in any size. The circle base is standard increases so you can add rounds to make it bigger or crochet less rounds to make it smaller.
The pom pom can be made more fluffy by adding extra chains to the loops or less fluffy and more dense by chaining less.
You can use any yarn you like – use the hook size recommended on your yarn label or go down a size if you want/need to.

Crochet Pom Pom Giant Bunny Tail Free Pattern
I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (medium weight; 100% acrylic) in Pink
With crochet hook size J/10 – 6mm
This pattern uses US terminology.
Rnd 1: Start by chaining 2. Work 8 hdc into the 2nd ch from the hook. (do not join rounds)
Rnd 2: Working in the 3rd loop only (loop at the back so the top V of the stitch is pushed to the front), 2 hdc in each of the next 8. (16 stitches)
Rnd 3: Continuing to work in the 3rd loop only, [hdc in next, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (24)
Rnd 4: Continuing to work in the 3rd loop only, [hdc in next 2, 2 hdc in next] 8 times. (32)
Add more increase rounds if you want it even bigger!
To add increase rounds just repeat round 4 but change the instruction ‘hdc in next 2’ so round 5 would be ‘hdc next 3’, round 6 would be ‘hdc next 4’ and so on. The total stitches for each round will increase by 8 each time.
You could even make an enormous fluffy rug!
When you are done increasing it’s time to add the ruffles.
Ruffles: Sl st in the 3rd loop of next stitch. Ch 10 (change this number if you want bigger or smaller loops) and turn.
Sc in last stitch. *Ch 10. Sc in next stitch. Ch 10, sc in same. Repeat from * all the way back along the spiral into the center of the circle.
Stitches are worked into the remaining 2 loops of the hdc stitches. Fold the ruffles down so you can see the stitches you are working in to.
When you are done fasten off. You may want to leave a long tail if you are sewing your pom pom onto something.
This is so sweet, it’ll be one of the features at Handmade Monday this week.
I’m going to give the Pom Pom a try, the things you make up are so clever, still working on my 2nd Sun Hat.
Sorry new to this, where is the 3rd loop/how do I create it? Is there a video?
Happy with step 1.
Half double crochet stitches have a loop at the back. Look at the top of the stitch and identify the sideways ‘V’. Pull the top of the row forward to find the extra loop behind the V – that’s the 3rd loop. Work stitches into there to create a ribbed effect – should look like the picture a few rounds down from the instruction. Hope this helps 🙂
Sl st in the 3rd loop of next stitch. Ch 10 (change this number if you want bigger or smaller loops) and turn.
Could you please tell us what you mean in this first line for RUFFLES direction when you say turn?
I am familiar with this meaning turn to the other side of the work/piece, but that does not seem to make sense here as I am not crocheting in the back of the circle for the RUFFLES. Thank you very much for sharing your practice! Peace
