Star Spangled Sun Hat

This design was inspired by the look of stripy five point star blankets and my love of making hats.

Recently I started to wonder how a star design would work in a hat and quickly got to work on this new idea.

Since it’s summer, I decided that this hat should be a summer sun hat, and because I’ve made a few children’s hat recently I decided to make this one in adult size; although this pattern could easily be used to produce a child sized hat.

The yarn I chose to use for this hat is Lily Sugar’n Cream because it’s cotton and I wanted my hat to be light and breathable. Also, this yarn is thick enough that it works up quite quickly which make this an easy and quick to complete project.

I chose red, white and blue for the colors, which when combined with the five point start produce a very patriotic sun hat – perfect for Independence Day. Also, I happened to have this yarn on hand after using it for my red, white and blue Star Coasters pattern.

It took me a while to develop this design; I started by watching how-to videos on how to make a star blanket.

Next I wanted to add some ribbing by using some front post double crochet stitches. It took me a little while to get started since, while I’ve done this kind of ribbing on hats before, I needed to figure out how to make it work with the star shape. Once I got things going it was pretty straight forward and the star grew easily to make the top of the hat.

The next challenge I had was working out how to make the sides of the hat; I needed the star to grow but had to maintain the same number of stitches so the hat would mold around the head.

I’m still learning as I go so it took me a while before settling on using some double crochet two together stitches to achieve this. I quickly ran into problems on the round joins and placement of that chain 2 at the start of each round.

After some playing around I decided that it seemed to work best when I did a partial dc2tog combined with the slip stitch to join. I’m not sure if this is an actual stitch or not so I’ve included detailed instructions on how I did it.

Once I’d made these decisions it was easy to just keep repeating the same round over and over until I reached what felt like a good place to start the brim. It was a little tricky to decide where I should start the brim because of the jagged edge of the star, so I stopped where I thought it felt like a good fit on my head but still pretty far above my eyes.

I made the brim by continuing the increase where I’d left off at the top of the hat and made it wide enough to keep the sun out of my eyes.

After I’d finished I thought it was too floppy so I used my yarn needle to thread some fishing wire (looks the same as this bead cord) I had in my craft box into each row of the brim. It would have been a lot easier to do this if I’d added the wire as I crocheted the brim so I’ve included the instructions to do this in the pattern. The wire makes it so the points of the hat can be moved and positioned slightly, but still floppy so it’s not pokey or able to get bent out of shape.

Mmm… patriotic cupcake supplies:

I’ve also made a PDF version of this pattern which can be purchased from my Ravelry Store. For a small fee, you get to enjoy an ad-free, printer friendly copy of this pattern.

Yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream (Medium weight; 100% cotton, 120 yards per 2.5oz), 2 skeins of white, 1 skein of Red, 1 skein of Indigo.

Hook: H/8 – 5mm

Other Materials: Fishing wire or other strengthening wire to give structure to brim of hat.

Gauge: 13sc x 14r = 4”

Special instruction: Partial dc2tog sl st needed in rounds 8 through 14 to finish rounds. Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over pull through stitch, yarn over pull through two loops. Insert hook into top of first dc of round, yarn over and pull through stitch and both loops.

Note: White can be dropped and picked up on each round, no need to cut it. Careful not to crochet over it. Red and blue I chose to cut at the end of each round but the ends can be crocheted over to save weaving in all those ends later.
