How to Make The Catalina Skirt

For this design, I wanted to experiment with working vertically using slow changing variegated yarn to highlight the rows of the piece. Adding an increase in at the top, like a partial chevron, meant that the rows would fall diagonally.

I didn’t want the hemline to be A-symmetric so I adjusted row lengths to form a zig-zag hemline. The pattern is really a two row repeat but to accentuate the zig-zags I made them 4 rows wide instead of two with the stitch-count to match the angle.

Since the skirt is worked flat in vertical rows, its really easy for you to make it in the size you want by simply working more or less rows to get the correct waist size for you or your recipient. Also, the rows are a 12 stitch repeat so you can adjust the length of your skirt by adding or subtracting multiples of 12 from the foundation chain when you start.

I love working with cotton yarn so I made this skirt with cotton. The cotton I chose is soft and light – Yarn Bee Sugar Wheel Cotton from Hobby Lobby.

The colorway and style of the resulting skirt reminded me of a recent romantic trip to Catalina Island, with it’s rugged coastline, gentle waves and warm sunsets. Therefore, I thought it fitting to name the skirt as such.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this pattern. For the free version scroll on down this page. If you’d prefer a PDF copy head on over to RAVELRY.

  1. Hi! My daughter and I are struggling with the beginning of this pattern. In row 1, when we try to follow it exactly, there are 17 stitches to start, and then the remaining 77 stitches is not devisable by 12, leaving us with leftover 5 Stitches in a chain. Is there a typo somewhere? Are we doing something wrong?

    1. Hi, thanks for letting me know. I’ve corrected it so there should be 6 chains left then you do the [chain 1 skip 1, dc in next] 3 times to finish up the row.
