I’m so excited to bring you this new free pattern today!
This Unicorn Cupcake hat design is based on ideas I had after putting together my UNICORN ROUND-UP POST a few months ago.
The round-up included unicorn hats and a sweet little unicorn cupcake so I thought, why not combine these ideas and create this beautiful and unique Unicorn Cupcake Hat.
I took a lot of time and effort to carefully design each piece. I wanted it to look like a cupcake, look great all put together and be easy for everyone to make.
For the body of the hat I started at the top and worked in a spiral, using 3rd loop half double crochet stitches to give the hat a soft frosted look. Then I made the brim wide to look like a cupcake.
When I’d done the basic cupcake hat I thought it looked great as a stand alone pattern – a nice and simple cupcake that you could decorate any way you wanted.
So, to make this unicorn cupcake hat you will need to visit the CUPCAKE BEANIE HAT page and make that first, before coming back here to get the pattern for the unicorn decoration.
The Unicorn hat in my photos is the 2-4 years size, so it might look a little different if you choose another hat size.
For the horn I repeated the ribbed spiral effect, although I used single crochet stitches to make a firmer piece that could be lightly stuffed and would stand up.
The ears I wanted to have in two colors, like my ELEPHANT EAR PATTERN. I think they look like fondant ears!
For the flowers I wanted something simple and elegant. They are very simple and quick to make. As an extra touch I decided to sew some tiny beads in the middle.
The eyes were a little difficult. I struggled to decide what expression I wanted my unicorn to have; happy, sleepy, excited. I thought the happy relaxed look worked best.
I tried to sew the eyes with crochet thread but found they looked too thin. I pulled them out and replaced them with black yarn – a single line made up of small stitches to get the right shape.
So, below you will find the pattern for the unicorn pieces and instructions on how to attach them to your cupcake hat. You will need to visit THIS PAGE first to make your hat.
