How to Crochet the Feather Storm Coat

With all the craziness that’s going on, how about a fun new crochet project to keep you busy?

I designed this long length cardigan for my mum to keep her warm in the chilly British weather. She is super happy with how it turned out and loves to wear it out and about.

It’s made using Lion Brand’s new Basic Stitch Anti-pilling yarn so I know it’s going to look great for much longer than other yarn would. The idea of this yarn is when it starts to pill, just throw it in the washer and the pills will disappear!

Basic Stitch yarn is also soft and sleek which was super nice to work with. It comes in a range of 32 colors including solids, marls and variegated – so many colors to choose from!

Hop on over to the Lion Brand Website to take a look!

For my project I chose the solid ‘Pumpkin’ and the variegated blue, grey called ‘Fairview’. The result kind of looks like fall leaves floating down an icy river.

Anyway, it’s a really fun project with an easy repeating pattern that you are likely able to memorize, while the variety of stitches keeps it interesting.

The pattern includes 8 different sizes and also the option to make it shorter if you like.

You will find the free pattern below or, if you prefer, I’ve also made a PDF available to buy via RAVELRY or ETSY.

Pocket measures 7” by 6”.

Place pocket on coat with pattern lined up. Flip pocket down and sew inside bottom seam. Flip pocket back up and sew the sides to the coat.

Part N – Button band

Sew the sides of the center hood panel to the top edges of the hood to form the hood. Using MC, sc along top front edge of center hood panel so it matches the front edge of rest of coat.

Place stitch markers along right side of coat where you want your button holes to be. I used 6 wood toggles and placed them about 15 stitches apart with the top one just below the collar bone and the bottom one just past the hips.

Using MC and starting at bottom right of coat, join yarn around post of first stitch and chain 7.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each across. (6sc). Back post slip stitch around next 2 stitches and turn.

Row 2: Skip 2 slip stitches, Working in the BLO, sc in each of next 6. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: Working in the BLO, sc in each of next 6. Back post slip stitch around next 2 stitches and turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your first button hole marker.

Button hole/alternate row 3: Working in the BLO, sc in each of next 2. Ch 2 and skip 2. BLO sc in remaining 2. Back post slip stitch around next 2 stitches and turn. Check your buttons fit the holes and adjust if needed.

Continue working rows 2 and 3 until next marker. Then repeat button hole instruction.

After button holes are complete continue working rows 2 and 3 all the way around hood and down the other side of the coat. Finish at bottom left of coat. Fasten off and weave in end. Sew buttons on left side of coat.

  1. The pattern looks so fun. The stitch especially. I have signed up but don’t have a way to print the pattern at home.

  2. Hi, Kat! Thank you very much this interesting pattern.
It’s beautiful but I think it a little too complicated.
Now I make three things – an afghan for my grandson, a west (with Granny Squares) for my niece and a shawl for myself.
Isn’t your pattern would made with a more simple crochet?

Hope that you and all your family and friends are well!
    Best wishes
    Marianne

  3. Kat, so interesting and incredible! Thanks for making the pattern available. I do simple things and am in a slump lately. But i still hoard patterns. 😊 I “saved” the bag pattern awhile back, thinking I will try it someday. Thank you so much for the info about the new LB yarn. Hope to try it eventually. I’ve been frustrated with yarns that were once very good, and the quality has been much degraded for some years now.

  4. Wow way bright for me though I love orange/pumpkin colour. I’d prefer this as a blanket in that pattern in those 2 colours.
