Hexagon Granny Square Hooded Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

Hey there, how’s the weather where you are?

I’m lucky enough to live where it stays pretty mild during the winter and most days we only need sweaters for trips to the park.

But, where ever you live, my new hexagon granny square hooded cardigan is sure to keep your little ones warm and cozy. Or yourself warm too, since this crochet sweater can be made in any size from baby through to adult.

I’ve been wanting to design and make a sweater for a while. I really enjoyed admiring the many styles from other crochet designers when I did my SWEATER PATTERNS ROUND-UP a few months ago. I also made a CARDIGAN PATTERNS ROUND-UP too.

So, for my first sweater design I thought I’d start with the basic concept of the granny hexagon.

This style of cardigan begins by making two large granny hexagons which are then folded in half. The top edges are sewn together to form the tops of the sleeves and the two hexagons are sewn together to make the back of the cardigan. Sometimes more rows of crochet are added to the sleeves and bottom of the cardigan to make them longer.

I love working in spirals since it gives me the colors without having to change and carry them. I also love how there’s no joining rounds which gives a beautiful seamless piece of crochet fabric.

With that in mind I thought it would be fun to figure out how to create a spiral granny hexagon. For the hexagons in this pattern I decided to use three colors and chose white, red and light blue. I didn’t want to work in rows so I made them big enough to get the total size I wanted.

Then, I thought this cardigan must have a hood!

So, for the hood I decided some spiral granny squares would look perfect. I needed four threads to make this spiral so used both ends of the white, with some red and the light blue. Three granny squares made this super cute hood.

I sewed it all together then crocheted a border around the whole cardigan. I thought dark blue really complimented the colors and gave the sweater a great look. Then I finished it off with a button to fasten it closed.

My finished design is this beautiful hooded sweater that’s like a wearable granny square afghan. I think my little one looks adorable in it!

He’s fifteen months, but since I was designing this sweater as I made it, it came out a little big and is actually an 18-24 month size. So, it fits him now with the sleeves folded over and will fit him when the weather gets cooler again too!

After I’d made it and worked out all the sizes I was able to draw up a size chart. So, you can make this cardigan in many sizes; make it for yourself or anyone you want to keep warm and cozy.

I really hope you enjoy this pattern!

Hexagon Granny Square Hooded Cardigan

Then when you’d wrap yourself up in it, nice and cozy by the fire, while you sipped a mug of the warm homemade cocoa she always made? Well, now you can recreate those feelings of coziness for yourself, and your loved ones, with this stunning modern twist on the classic, snuggly spiral granny hooded sweater.

This beautiful hexagon granny square hooded cardigan is based on the traditional design but in a fun spiral form instead of the usual rounds. Hexagons (make 2)

The number of rounds you need will depend on the size of cardigan you want to make.

To check the size as you are making your first hexagon: measure along one side, then measure the height of 3 rows (to allow for border). Add these two numbers together and find it in the ‘centre back to wrist’ column of the size chart. Add rounds to your hexagon until you have the correct size. Make the second hexagon with the same number of rounds.

The cardigan shown is 18-24 month size (model is 15 months old). My total sleeve length is 16 inches. One side of my hexagon is 14.5 inches and the height of 3 rows (my border) is 1.5 inches. I did 13 rounds.

Rnd 1: Using white, make a magic ring [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in ring. Join blue into the ring to the left of white [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, 3 dc] into ring. Join red into the ring to the left of blue [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, 3 dc] into ring.

Rnd 2: Pick up white. *Working into chain space [3dc, ch2, 3dc]. Repeat from * with blue and red.

Rnd 3: With each color: [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into each of next 2 spaces between shells.

Rnd 4: Twice with each color: 3 dc in next sp, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into corner.

Rnd 5: Twice with each color: 3 dc in to each of next 2 sps, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into corner.

Rnd 6: Twice with each color: 3 dc in to each sp, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into corner.

Repeat rnd 6 until hexagon is desired size.

Finish: With each color: [dc, hdc, sc] in next sp, sl st in top of next stitch and fasten off.

Make second hexagon with the same number of rounds.

Assembly

Fold the hexagons in half. It is important to match sides where you fastened off so the stitch counts match up when you sew them together. On the cardigan shown, the sides where the red fastened off is positioned at the wrists. One sleeve has the fasten off point on the back of the cardigan while the other sleeve has it on the front.

Sew top of your sleeves along the outside from wrist to neck using mattress stitch. You can use another sewing method if your prefer.

Leave room for the neck opening. See size chart for how wide the opening needs to be. Divide the number in the chart by 2 and measure from the end of the piece you are sewing. Stop sewing between the two shells closest to the measurement.

Example: I needed a 7 inch neck opening so I stopped sewing each hexagon 3.5 inches, which was 2 shells, before the end. You may want to leave an extra shell on each side if you prefer a bigger hood (my hood was a little on the small side). Leave the same number of shells on each side of the neck opening.

Sew the two hexagons together down the back.

Hood Squares (make 3)

Rnd 1: Using white, make a magic ring. Working into the ring, [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2]. Join blue into the ring to the left of white. Work [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2]. Join 2nd white into the ring to the left of blue. Work [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2]. Join red into the ring to the left of 2nd white. Work [Sc, hdc, dc, ch 2].

Rnd 2: Pick up 1st white. *Work 3 dc into the top of the sc stitch of the next color. Repeat from * with blue, 2nd white and red.

Rnd 3: With each color: [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in ch space.

Rnd 4: With each color: 3dc in next sp, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in corner ch space.

Rnd 5: With each color: 3dc in each of next 2 sps, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in corner ch space.

Stop here if you left 2 shells on each side of neck opening.

Rnd 6: With each color: 3dc in each of next 3 sps, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in corner ch space.

Stop here if you left 3 shells on each side of neck opening.

Rnd 7: With each color: 3dc in each of next 4 sps, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in corner ch space.

Stop here if you left 4 shells on each side of neck opening.

If you have more shells, add more rounds.

Finish: With each color: [dc, hdc, sc] in next ch sp, sl st and fasten off in top of next stitch.

Assembling the hood

Sew two squares around the neck opening. The corners of the squares need to line up with the top front corners of the cardigan opening and where the two hexagons join in the centre back.

Fold the third square in half. Sew one side to top of first square. Sew opposite side to top of second square. Sew the back of the hood closed.

Border

Use Windsor blue.

Work border all the way around the cardigan starting at the bottom back.

Work the border around edge of each sleeve.

Rnd 1: Ch 2. Dc in each stitch around.

Corners: [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in ch sps at bottom front corners of the cardigan.

Sl st in top of first dc to join.

Rnds 2 & 3: Repeat round 1.

At the end of round 3, use invisible join to finish. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sew on button to finish. Button fits snuggly between middle row of double crochet stitches on the other side of the cardigan to close.

If you’d like to add some pockets to your cardigan, just follow the hood squares part of the pattern to make two and sew them on.
