Crochet Amigurumi Spider Pattern

I’m so excited for Halloween and have been having a lot of fun recently with producing some special new patterns for the occasion.

This week I’ve been busy trying to design the perfect no-sew spider and turn it into an easy to follow pattern to share with you.

I made some spiders last year by starting out with a squashed ball shape and then crocheting the legs on afterwards.

They looked ok but the pattern wasn’t really workable so this year I was determined to make a better spider, all in one piece with easy to follow instructions.

After a lot of experimentation, this is my final spider design.

These spiders are small and really quick to make. You could make a whole bunch of them, all black or different colors to decorate your home for Halloween.

I’m going to add some thread to mine and hang them up but I also thought they would look great on a hat so I came up with a new spiral beanie hat to sew one to.

So, before I share this pattern with you I wanted to talk about the design process that I went through to produce this pattern.

Designing takes a lot of work but it is also an enjoyable and fascinating journey.

This process started out with the idea to create a spider similar to the ones I made last year, but be all in one piece with no sewing required.

I started with a basic spiral to form a circle and then progressed to a dome. Next I had to figure out how to add legs followed by the challenge of continuing the body beneath the legs before stuffing the spider and closing the bottom.

This first attempt resulted in the black creature you see below. I shared this in a crochet group to get some opinions. Some said it looked like a crab, others thought a tick while most agreed that it needed a head to look like a spider.

For my second attempt I focused on adding a head. I really wanted to avoid making a separate head and sewing it on.

I’d recently discovered bobble and popcorn stitches so wondered if this would work. I watched some Youtube tutorials and decided the popcorn could work if I made it inverted. I also decided to move the legs along and make them slightly longer.

The colored spiders you see below are what I came up with.

These are the same as the final design, just with color changes. I made the purple one first, and then since the preschooler complained ‘the spider has no eyes!’, I tried to switch colors on a loop of the 2nd and 4th double crochet stitches that make up the popcorn stitch.

I didn’t like the look of these eyes and, since changing colors adds difficulty, I decided to stick with solid color spiders and think they look much better anyway.

However, if you do want different colored legs, you just need to be switching colors on round five only – switch on the last loop before the front post single crochet stitches and switch back on the last slip stitch of the legs.

After I’d finished making these spiders I thought they’d look great on a hat so I made this Fun Spiral Beanie Hat Pattern.

This hat is similar to my Spooky Spiral Halloween hat, except I’ve designed it to be a unisex beanie and the pattern includes instructions to make it in any size.

If you would like an ad-free PDF copy of this pattern, it’s available in My Ravelry store for a small fee. The PDF includes both the beanie hat and spider patterns.
