How to Crochet an Oval

I needed to make an oval but didn’t have much luck in finding something suitable. I wanted to work in the round rather than in a spiral and I also wanted something that was written very simply. So, since I couldn’t find what I wanted I had to go figure it out myself until I got something I was happy with. Ovals are tricky so maybe you are struggling too and this will help you. I’ve written this in a way that it should be easy to manipulate to make ovals of different sizes.

Start with a slip knot and chain how ever many you want. For the example in the video I chained 6.

Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Crochet math – How many did you chain? Minus 3 = X.

Sc in each of the next X number of chains. I chained 6. So 6 minus 3 is 3. I Sc in each of the next 3 chains. You should have 1 chain left over. Put 3 single crochets in this chain to work around the end. Then Sc in each of the next X chains, so I Sc in each of the next 3 to work along the bottom of the oval/foundation chain. 2Sc in the last chain and sl st to join in the top of the 1st sc. (the 1st Sc and these last 2 make up the 3 sc needed for the corner/end)

Rnd 2: ch1. Sc in each of the next X. 2sc in each of next 3. Sc in each of next X. 2sc in each of next 3. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Rnd 3: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in next) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in next) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Rnd 4: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 2) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 2) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Rnd 5: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 3) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 3) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

I stop here in the video but if you wanted to add more rounds, just keep going as follows (it increases in the same way a circle would)

Rnd 6: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 4) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 4) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Rnd 7: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 5) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 5) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Rnd 8: ch 1. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 6) 3 times. Sc in each of next X. (2sc, sc in each of next 6) 3 times. Sl st to join in top of 1st sc.

Below is another example of an oval that can be made with this pattern. Start by chaining 32. X=29. Repeat the pattern as above for 8 rounds. At the end of round 8 you will have 160 single crochets. This oval formed the base of my Virus Bag (see next post for the complete pattern)

  1. I’ve been wanting to learn how to do crochet. And your blog is so helpful and easy to follow especially for beginners like me! We’ll try this when i get to have a free time.

  2. I thought of learning crochet once. I even bought the materials but never got around to doing any project. If you have a newbie tutorial maybe I could get into it sometime? I still have the strings somewhere in the house. Gotta find the hook.

    1. I was thinking I might do a beginner series sometime. But for now I suggest Youtube, I taught myself from watching tutorials on there 🙂

  3. The only time I tried to do crochet was a total failure haha, I couldn’t make the round shape, it looked like a messy shapeless thing 🙁 (it was supposed to be a dog) since then I didn’t try again. You make it look easy though, I might give it another try 😀

  4. I used to create one when I was in High School. It was a long time ago and now I want to start doing it again. Great post!
