Twisted Cat Hat Free Crochet Pattern

So here it is, the second of the two ‘pussyhat’ designs I came up with after a friend asked me to make her a cat hat to wear to the Women’s Rights March.

I love to design so I got excited at this opportunity to experiment and produce a fun new hat pattern.

The two hat designs I came up with are both striped and spiraled but use very different methods to create two completely different looks. If you haven’t seen the first of these two yet, be sure to check it out HERE.

For this second hat I wanted to try out the vertical swirl style I’d seen pictures of. I didn’t know how to do it so was excited to learn this new technique. I found a free pattern for a spiral slouchy hat and went from there.

I wanted my hat to have a ribbed texture so the spiral would still stand out if the hat were made in one color. I also had to experiment to see what would work and how it looked with my yarn.

I knew I wanted to explore other yarns that I’d never worked in before, but first I had to learn this technique and develop my pattern using the yarn I had on hand.

So, I made this sample hat using two different colors of Red Heart Super Saver.

I liked how this hat turned out and was happy with my first attempt at this spiral effect. I did single crochet stitches and worked them into the back loops only. So, from this I decided I wanted the rows taller and the ribbing to be more pronounced.

Also, I thought it would look better with a bulkier yarn to make it a cozier hat. I don’t have a whole lot of experience using different yarns so made a trip to my local Michael’s store to take a look around and squish some yarn.

It was really hard to find the perfect yarn since it also needed to be solid feminine colors.

I decided to go with Lion Brand Homespun (affiliate link to see this yarn on Amazon). I really liked the soft luxurious feel and the deep, vibrant pink of the Peony color. I chose Purple Aster to compliment it.

The yarn was a little difficult to work with at first due to it’s bumpy weave. However, once I got the hang of turning the hook downward as I pulled it through the stitches it didn’t snag as much and was enjoyable to work with.

I love how this hat turned out. It’s really cozy and luxurious with a soft and silky texture. I hope you will love it too!

Twisted Cat Hat Pattern

Twisted Cat Hat is a super soft warm and cozy hat. It has a fun gentle spiral design with a ribbed texture. This hat is one of two designs I came up with when asked by a friend to make her a hat for the upcoming Women’s Rights March.

The pattern starts out with the construction of a flat parallelogram. Slip stitches are used to join the two ends together and to close the top of the hat. A few rounds form the brim of the hat. Lastly a few stitch are added in the top corners to shape the ears.

You are welcome to sell the items you make with this pattern, but please give me, Krazy Kabbage, a mention in your sales listing and provide a link to my website www.krazykabbage.com.

I used Lion Brand Homespun (bulky weight; 98% acrylic, 2% other fiber) in Peony and Purple Aster.

You will need crochet hook size K-10.5 (6.5mm) and a yarn needle.

This pattern uses US terminology.

Stitches: Half-double crochet (hdc), Half-double crochet two together (Hdc2tog), Single crochet (Sc), Slip stitch (sl st).

Pattern

Ch 26.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and each of next 24.

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Working in the 3rd (back-back) loop only, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in each of next 22. Hdc2tog once (or invisible decrease) at end of row.

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Continuing to work in 3rd loop only, hdc in each of 25 across.

Row 4: Repeat from Row 2. Switch to purple at end of this row.

Continue to repeat rows 3 and 4. One repeat in purple, two repeats in pink.

Stop when you have completed the 6th purple section.

Assembly

Using pink, slip stitch through both thicknesses to join the 2 short sides of the parallelogram together.

2 sc in same space to form top corner. Continue with slip stitches along the top of the hat to close it. Fasten off. Turn hat right way out.

Brim

Rnd 1: Pick up purple. Ch1. Hdc around bottom edge of hat. Sl st to join.

Place the stitches as evenly as possible so the hat fits your head. I made 47 hdc around.

Rnd 2: Ch 1. Hdc in 3rd loop only of each around. Sl st to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 1. Sc in 3rd loop only of each around. Sl st to join and fasten off.

Ears

Use yarn needle and small length of yarn to sew across top corners of hat and form base of ear triangles. Thread ends through to inside of hat and tie ends together to secure.
