How to make an English Garden Sun Hat

After finishing up the LACE SHELL SCARF last week I got the urge to make a sun hat in the same lace shell stitch design.

I just love to play with stitch techniques and see what patterns I can come up with – it’s a lot of fun for me and more free patterns for you!

It took me a little while to figure out how to make it work in the round and how to increase stitches but here it is: This beautiful lace shell sun hat!

The hat is quite floppy so this week I plan on strengthening it by adding a lining to the brim.

This pattern has been carefully written with detailed and clear instructions. It should be relatively easy to work up even though it appears to be a complicated masterpiece.

  1. How many shells do you make in the first Rnd 2? The picture looks like 3, but I get 4 as each useds 3of the 12 DC’s in Rnd 1.

    Thanks!

  2. I love this! Do you think soaking it in starch, or maybe a 50% glue mix, would stiffen it enough? I am not great at crochet but I think I have to give it a try!

  3. Starch, not glue! Any moisture will turn it into a sticky gummy messy! Sew a removable lining with a grosgrain ribbon as the inner band and save the lining pattern as it will need removal every few years to wash, restarch and reline it! Very clever, my great grandmother had one similiar and upkept this process to keep it keen!
    Cheers
