Halloween Spider Hat and Web Costume

This week I’m sharing with you this fun spider hat and web Halloween costume I made for my son a few years ago when he was just a year old.

I wanted something unique, fun and comfortable for him to wear. I also wanted him to be able to wear it for a few years so I planned the design out with the future in mind. I made the hat so that it was a loose fit and would fit him for at least the next year.

The web I made to fit over the back of the stroller but also so that it would work as a poncho later with holes big enough to fit his head and arms.

My boy loves his costume and has worn it for the last three years and wants to wear it again this year. We always get a lot of compliments from people admiring my crochet creation. They say ‘Wow! You made that?’ and then they give us extra candy!

As part of the costume I dressed him in a black long sleeve top so the web stood out. I’ve used jeans or black pants for the bottom. It’s pretty casual and comfortable to wear. The web goes over the head like a poncho and then just pop the arms through any of the holes at shoulder height.

When you are done and it’s all covered in candy goo you can throw it in the wash and pack it away for next year!

I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn so it’s really low cost to make – 1 skein of white and 1 skein of black is plenty.

I also think this design could work as an octopus costume too. My vision for that is a greenish blue hat with an orange-red or purple net.

This pattern is easy to follow and works up quite quickly.

The hat is a basic half double crochet beanie with the legs and eyes made separately and sewn on.

The web starts with the collar with some tall stitches to make the web. I’ve included step-by-step instructions on how to make the tall triple treble crochet stitches.

Sl st to join and fasten off leaving a long tail (12-18″)

Assembly

Sew eyes to hat using the white tail. I sewed around the posts of the hdc stitches.

Sew a line of stitches to make the mouth, triangles to outline the teeth then fill them in with several stitches in the same direction.

Squash the leg openings flat and sew them to the hat. I didn’t stuff my legs but you can if you prefer a less floppy look. You might want to pin them first to get a position you are happy with. My squashed opening lines are vertical. They don’t need to be perfect!

This child harness is great for keeping your little one safe this Halloween. I used this the second year he wore this costume. I put the harness on under the web and threaded the strap through a hole in the back. He was able to have some independence without getting lost in the sea of trick or treaters.

  1. I made this for my son’s Halloween costume this year and we all loved it! I had a increase a few things on the spider web and add a few rows at the bottom of the hat( he’s a big boy for 1) but it was so perfect and easy to follow!
