I Love This Cotton (medium weight; 100% cotton) in Red, blue and white sparkle (or plain white).
You will need crochet hook size H – 5.0mm
Gauge: 12 single crochet x 15 rows = 4″.
This pattern uses US terminology.
Stitches and Terms Used: Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), front post double crochet (FPDC) slip stitch (sl st), magic ring (mr), single crochet three together (sc3tog)
Start here
Rnd 1: Start with red, make a magic ring and chain 2. Dc in to the ring switching to white on the last loop. Dc in ring with white switching back to red on last loop. Continue to alternate colors until you have 12 dc in the ring not including the initial ch 2. With red, slip stitch in top of 1st dc to join.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in same stitch. Front-post dc (FPDC) around same, changing to white on last loop. Dc in next and FPDC changing back to red. Continue to work the round with alternating colors until you have a total of 24 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch and FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 36 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in next, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 48 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in each of next 2, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in each of next 2, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 60 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 6: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in each of next 3, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in each of next 3, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 72 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 7: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in each of next 4, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in each of next 4, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 84 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 8: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in each of next 5, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in each of next 5, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 96 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnd 9: Ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in each of next 5, Skip 1, FPDC around FPDC switch to white on last loop. 2 DC in next stitch, dc in each of next 5, Skip 1, FPDC around FPDC switching back to red on last loop. Continue to work around in this way. Until you have a total of 96 dc not including the ch 2. With red, slip stitch to join in top of 1st dc.
Rnds 10-15: Repeat round 9. At end of rnd 15 join blue and fasten off red.
Rnd 16: With blue. Ch 1. 2sc in same stitch. 2sc in each stitch around. Sl st to join. (192 sc)
Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join. (192sc)
Rnd 18: Ch 1. *Sc in same stitch and each of next 4. Change to white on last loop. With white, draw up a loop in same stitch, and each of next 2. YO with blue and pull through all 4 loops on hook to make a sc3tog stitch. With blue, repeat from * around. Slip stitch to join after last repeat. (192 sc)
Rnd 19: With blue. Ch 1, sc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join. (192 sc)
Rnd 20: Ch 1. Sc in same stitch and sc in next, *changing to white on last loop. With white, draw up a loop in same stitch, and each of next 2. YO with blue and pull through all 4 loops on hook to make a sc3tog stitch. With blue, sc in same stitch and each of next 4. Repeat from * around. On last repeat you should have only 3 blue sc, not 5. Then sl st to join. (192 sc)
Rnd 21: With blue. Ch 1, sc in same stitch and each around. Sl st to join. (192 sc)
Repeat rounds 18-21. Then repeat rounds 18 and 19 again. (12 rounds of blue). Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block finished sun hat and use spray starch to stiffen the brim.
