Alien Rainbow Beanie Hat Free Crochet Pattern

My boy loves all things space, planets and black holes. When I asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween he said he wanted to be an alien.

He loves the fun things I crochet for him and had a lot of fun the last few years wearing the spider and web outfit I made for him. So, he was excited when I decided to design a special alien hat for him.

I’ve had a lot of fun working with spirals recently so this hat builds on that. I found it a challenge to start off with two separate spirals then merge them into one to form the top of the hat.

The result is a seamless spiral that flows from the tops of the antenna all the way down to where the brim is crocheted on.

For my first attempt at this hat design I used three colors, blue, green and orange, using the yarn from both ends of the skeins.

After I’d finished working the body of the hat, I tied off five of the ends and then used the sixth to add a neat and stretchy brim to the edge of the hat.

The method used for this hat means that there is only one end to weave in at the end. The spiral makes for no color changing, no joining rounds and a seamless design – an easy and enjoyable hat to make.

My son couldn’t decide what color hat he wanted so asked for rainbow colors. This hat accommodates rainbow colors perfectly with three warm colors on the first antennae, three cold colors on the second and the seventh color used for the brim.

I’ve also included a pattern for eyes, which are made separately and sewn on.

Eyes are optional, no eyes or as many as you like.

Alien Rainbow Crochet Hat Pattern

Alien Rainbow Beanie is a fun and colorful beanie hat which can be made in five different sizes from baby through to large adult. The spiral design accommodates six colors for the main part of the hat plus one for the brim so colors can be chosen to suit your style.

The pattern starts out by making the two antennae which spiral down and then join together to form the top of the hat. The colors then continue to spiral together to make the body of the hat. The brim is then crocheted on over the ends of the rainbow strands. Lastly eyes, which are optional, are made and sewn on to finish.

  1. I love this hat. Thank you. However I am a little lost on what the x means and x+2. Could you explain it to me please

    1. Hi Sabrina. Glad you like the pattern. The X tell you how many stitches you need to do and depends on the size of hat you are making. So, if you were making the kids size hat, X=7. When you get to the ‘length’ section of the pattern, it would be 7 + 2. So the instruction would be “Hdc in each of the next 9 stitches with each color”. Hope this helps 🙂

  2. Question in the brim. “Sc in back loop of ch 1, ch 1 and turn. Sc I. Each of next 7”. Are these 7 in back loops only as well?

    1. yes it’s all the single crochets on the brim are back loop only. When you slip stitch onto the hat that’s both loops 🙂
