How to Crochet the Feather Storm Tote Bag

This week I have a new bag pattern for you!

I had a lot of fun designing and making my FAST FORWARD CHEVRON PURSE and it proved to be very popular too.

So, I thought it would be fun to design another bag with a different stitch combination and make something a little bigger too.

Here is what I came up with – this beautiful Feather Storm Tote Bag.

This bag features the gently flowing millstone stitch, which I’ve turned on it’s side to look like feathers that are raining down – hence the name.

I’ve also added a little more texture to really make it pop.

This bag is bigger than my last one and will be perfect if you need a large purse, diaper bag, overnight bag or whatever else you can think to use it for.

If you want to line your bag, and add some pockets inside, you may find my HOW TO LINE A BAG photo tutorial helpful.

Row 3 – end: Sc back and forth (10 sc each way) for approximately 35 rows or until strap is desired length. Fasten off.

Make second strap: Start in 2nd marked stitch with a standing single crochet (how to: start with slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook). Sc in each of next 39. Turn. Repeat row 2 until 10 stitches remain then repeat row 3 – end.

Leave a longer tail for sewing. Use mattress stitch or other joining method to join ends of straps together. Secure ends and weave in to finish. Optional: add a lining with pockets and zipper to complete your bag.

  1. Love this bag and the first one!! Your designs are great very different and creative. Thank you for sharing 🙂

  2. Stunning!! Absolutely stunning! I can see so many possibilities with this, as I have a habit (LOL) of buying every variegated, ombre and mixed color yarn I find on sale or clearance! I have so many colors that I didn’t know what to do with! Now I do!! Designers amaze me. I don’t know how you do it, but I am so glad you do! Thank you for being so generous as to share!

  3. It’s a wonderful pattern. I love it!
Unfortunately I don’t understand the crochet explanation in English (i’m living in the Netherlands).
Is there any possibility for a Dutch translation, somehow, somewhere, some person ?????
    Thans a lot for sharing.

  4. Question…. after I make the first strip, and it says follow rows 1-8 around the base of bag…. is that in strips/sections or literally around the base of bag? Love the colors!

    1. The panel is worked straight onto the bag base as it’s made. It’s like when you do the brim on a top-down beanie.

      1. What does it say? PDF. I found were it can be brought on Ravery. Have not seen were it was free. HELP Please

      2. Hiya, I’m having an issue with the stitch count from Row 3 which finishes with 66 stitches, which I’ve got, but the following row when I work it according to instructions comes to 72, not 78 as in the pattern. Each row increases by 6 sc if I’m following correctly, so now I’m confused what I’ve missed…Thank you for sharing your patterns, they are stunning 😍

  5. I don’t understand the directions for round 3 where it says place first sc of each round in same stitch…
    Thank you

  6. I’m in looooove with this pattern! I’m on my 3rd bag as I type! All three I’ve made are different color combos and with this bag I made a round base and will be finishing it off as a drawstring bag/backpack for my Male friend who asked for one! Thank you!!

  7. I love the look of this bag. I’ve never made a bag in cotton, but I’d assume it’s the same as working with any other fiber. In fact, I’ve only made one other bag but this looks so pretty I need to make it..thank you!

  8. Hey I was wondering if it’s possible to make the bag a little smaller… can I just stop at round 10 and it will still work out?

    1. Hi, the stitch count on the last row before the panel needs to be a multiple of 8. Round 10 is not, but round 8 is. So stop at the end of round 8, skip to round 13 and then do the panel. If you find that your panel is too tall you could chain 30 instead of 40 then you would have 29 where the pattern says 39. For the top section of the bag – round 14, you will have 96 instead of 120. The stitch marking instructions won’t work so you will need to adjust as needed or follow the instructions for the top section of the fast-forward chevron bag since that is 96 stitches. Hope this helps 🙂 Enjoy making your bag!

  9. Love, love this bag and I’m about 1/4 around the body. Now I have a question. My bottom has 2 pouches on it; on opposite sides. Is that normal or do I need to start all over? I really paid attention to the number of stitches each round, so wondering is this normal or should the bottom be flat?

  10. Thank you for the free pattern! I love it!
I am a little stumped on row 4 of the panel…The part that says working in front of previous rows, DC of the skipped stitch in row 1…. Thank you for your help !!

  11. I love making your featherstorm tote, and i have your patrern for the chevron tote. I
seem to remember another, similar one. Can you tell me if im right?

  12. This is a fabulous pattern. Just made one as a gift but used rainbow colour yarn inside black. Stunning effect. Thank you so much for the pattern 😁🙃🤩
