How to Crochet a Personal Carpet Square

Today I’m going to show you how to make your own personal sized carpet square. I originally made this rug for my preschooler who had a hard time sitting still on the big carpet with the other kids yet didn’t like sitting off the carpet.

He wished he had his own carpet, as big as the teacher’s carpet. However, since a class sized carpet just for him wasn’t practical, I decided to design a miniature version, which is almost identical, but perfectly sized just for him.

It worked perfectly, for about a week, then the pandemic happened and all the schools shut down. However, since social distancing will be required when they reopen, this personal carpet is going to be very useful.

So, scroll down, follow the free pattern, and enjoy making this colorful personal carpet square for your preschooler or kindergartener.

Or, If you’d prefer a PDF copy of this pattern, it is available for purchase in my RAVELRY and ETSY stores.

The Personal Carpet Square is a colorful individual sized rug; perfect for a child to sit on in this new socially distanced world. Inspired by a large classroom carpet, it was originally designed for a squirmy child who needed more space. This compact rug can easily fit in a backpack to be pulled out and placed to provide space and comfort for a single child.

This is a quick and easy crochet project with detailed instructions. Colors can be customized to taste. The mat can be made with cotton yarn if preferred. Finished project measures 19 inches square.
