Crochet Linked Hearts Hat Free Pattern

Here is my pattern for interlocking hearts set into a panama hat. The hat fits an adult. Let me know if you want a pattern for a smaller size. If there’s enough people wanting it I’ll figure it out and write it up.
There are 12 hearts in the hat so choose what colours you like. The first hat I made I used white alternating with different pastel colours – lilac, pink, green, light blue, yellow, and light brown (didn’t have peach yarn). I used soft grey for the main part of the hat.

The second hat, as shown in the video, I used, medium green, medium blue, medium purple, dark green, dark blue, dark purple – repeat. I used arran as the main hat colour.

If you use this pattern and sell the hat you make please give me a mention on the listing… something like designed by or pattern by Krazy Kabbage.

I’m still quite new to writing patterns so if you find mistakes just write a comment and let me know and I’ll fix it.

This pattern is in US crochet terms since I learned to crochet by watching YouTube and using Google and that’s what I’m familiar with and write my patterns in.

Hook – F/5 3.75mm

Red Heart Yarn

Start by making the hearts.

Make a slip knot and working loosely. Chain 19. Ch 2 more and slip stitch in the back loop of the second chain from the hook. Chain 4 more. Slip stitch in the back of the first chain to make a ring.

Ch1 and Sc in same loop. Working in loops on the back of the foundation chain, Sc in each of the next 6 loops. 3sc in the next loop. Sc in each of the next 6 loops, 2sc in the next loop, 1sc in the next, 2sc in the next and 1sc in each of the next 2. You should have reached the top centre of the heart. Jump over this bit. Sc in each of the next 2 loops. 2sc in the next loop, Sc in the next loop and slip stitch in the top of the first Sc to join. Tie off.

Second heart

Make a slip knot and working loosely. Chain 19. Ch 2 more and slip stitch in the back loop of the second chain from the hook. Chain 4 more. Place the first (or previous heart) face up and drop the tail of the heart you are working on down through the centre of the last heart. Slip stitch in the back of the first chain of your current heart to make a ring.

Tie off. Repeat from second heart until you have a chain of 11 hearts.

Lay all the hearts out face up and check they are all connected correctly. Drag them so that they form a big almost complete circle. Start making the final heart, the same as above. To join, put the tail down through the previous heart then snake it down through the first heart and towards the centre of the big circle of hearts. Continue to make this last heart as above. After you’ve done a few stitches just check the hearts are connected correctly. Finish of the heart and tie off.

Next we will make the top boarder of the hearts.

Using the yarn you have chosen for the main part of your hat. Find the top centre point of 1 of the hearts, see 2 stitches? count back (to the right) and find the top of the 2nd Sc. Slip stitch to join in the back loop of that Sc. Ch 1, continuing to work in back loops of the 2 loops on the top of the stitches, Sc in the next stitch, Hdc in each of the next 2, Sc in each of the next 2. Look at the next heart and find the middle 2 stitches, count back the the 3rd one, yarn over and insert hook through the back loop of that 3rd stitch and the next stitch on the heart you are working on, yarn over and pull through and make Hdc. *Working along the top of the next heart and in back loops only, Sc in each of the next two stitches, Hdc in each of the next 2, Sc in each of the next 2. Find that 3rd stitch of the next heart and Hdc through both thicknesses. Repeat from * around the ring of hearts. Slip stitch to join in the top of the first Sc and tie off. Set hearts ring aside.

Now we make the hat.

Rnd 1: Using the yarn your have chosen for the main part of the hat. Make a magic ring (or whatever ring you like)  Ch2 and make 11 Dc in the ring. Sl st in the top of the first Dc and close the ring. (12DC)

Rnd 2: Ch2 and Dc in same space, 2 Dc in the top of each Dc around, sl st to join (24 Dc)

Rnd 3: Ch2 and Dc in same space. Dc in next Dc, 2 Dc in next around, sl st to join (36 Dc)

Rnd 4: Ch2 and Dc in same space. Dc in each of next 2 Dcs, 2 Dc in next around, sl st to join (48 Dc)

Rnd 5: Ch2 and Dc in same space. Dc in each of next 3 Dcs, 2 Dc in next around, sl st to join (60 Dc)

Rnd 6: Ch2 and Dc in same space. Dc in each of next 4 Dcs, 2 Dc in next around, sl st to join (72 Dc)

Rnd 7: Ch2 and Dc in same space. Dc in each of next 5 Dcs, 2 Dc in next around, sl st to join( 84 Dc)

Rnds 8-11: Ch2 and Dc in each Dc around, sl st to join. Do not fasten off.

Now we join the two pieces together.

Take ring of hearts, inside out with the top boarder at the top. Place top section of hat into the ring (should be upside down).

Continuing with the hat piece, insert hook through both loops of any stitch at the top of the hearts boarder, hook through into the back loop only of the next stitch on the hat pieces. Draw up a loop and make a slip stitch. Continue to slip stitch all the way around through both thicknesses – in both loops of the hearts piece and the back loop only on the hat piece. When you flip the hearts up to check you should see a single line that outlines the heart section. Finish the round and fasten off and cut yarn.

Next we work the bottom boarder of the hearts.

Find the bottom centre point of a heart (middle of the 3 Scs) Join main colour yarn with a slip stich through the back loop only. Continuing to work in back loops only, *Sc in the next stitch, Hdc in the next, Dc2tog. Find the centre point of the next heart and count back 5. Triple Crochet through both thicknesses. Working in the next heart, remember back loops only, Dc2tog, Hdc, Sc, Slst. Repeat from * around. Slip stitch to join in the top of the first SC.

Ch2. Working in back loops this round only, DC in each stitch around and slip stitch to join in top of first DC.

Ch2 and Dc in same space, *Dc in each of next 7. 2Dc in next, repeat from * around and slipstitch to join (108 Dc)

Ch2 and Dc in same space, *Dc in each of next 8. 2Dc in next, repeat from * around and slipstitch to join (120 Dc)

Ch1 and Sc in each around. Slip stitch to join.
Ch1 and Sc backwards all the way around. Slip stitch to join, fasten off and weave in end.

  1. I am saving this! I know how to crochet but not that well. I need to make a hat for my daughter. Thank you for this post.

    1. Thanks. It’s a really fun pattern. There’s a hidden pin on this page (press the Pin button and it should show up) if you wanted to save it to your Pinterest board for later 🙂

  2. Very sweet hat – it’s a nice twist on the traditional panama hat. I especially like it with the bright colours for the hearts.

  3. When I try to print off linkrd heart pattern. the file is always corrupted. I have tried from many parts. How do I get a clean copy?
